Original, quality 19th century steel Railway guards' whistle of the escargot form with embossed brass side plates detailing "London & North Western Railway Company". These type of whistles were referred to as button whistles and were manufactured by the whistle company in short or one-off runs. The L & N W R Company was operational from 1846 to 1922 and I have dated this example to mid to late 19th century rather than early 20th century for it is manufactured in tinplate and has never been nickel or chrome-plated. This has a very interesting method of construction, a triangular ring for a chain and despite two small wear holes to the mouthpiece it does work very well and very loud. Polished and lacquered, although the lacquer may be removed at no extra cost and complete and in good and working order.
