Avery White Knight Grocers Scales & Weights S301
Original, quality late 19th century set of grocers' / butchers' counter scale with an original stack of seven brass weights 4lb down to 1/2 ounce. This most unusual example has an enamelled white on cast iron body, transfer printed "Avery White Knight" and "to weigh 20lb", a square ceramic slab, transfer decorated with a figure of The Scales of Justice and a circular cast brass tray to take the weights. The stacking weights are the standard number of circular brass ones. The brass has all been polished and lacquered, although the lacquer may be removed at no extra cost. Fully overhauled and apart from some very minor chips to the enamel, a little discolouration, complete and in good and working order.

Total scale 11" tall x 22" wide plus 11" front to back.

Ceramic slab 11" x 10" x 2".

Weights 4" tall x 4.5" diam.

Original, quality late 19th century grocers' / butchers' counter scale with a blacksmith made wrought iron centre column on a decorative cast iron base and mounted with the brass beam scale. This example has three brass chain rods with a heavy cast brass pan for the weights to one side and a circular porcelain plate to the other with a brass frame support. A stack of old brass weights and a 2lb and 1lb brass bell shaped weight are included. The ceramic slab is transfer printed for "W&T Avery of Birmingham" the manufacturer of the scale and the horizontal brass beam is stamped for the same, back and front. The brass has been polished and lacquered, although the lacquer may be removed at no extra cost and all will dismantle into nine pieces for ease of transport and all is complete and in good and working order. A super all original set of scales.

Original, quality part set of late 19th century W&T Avery ceramic grocers' / butchers' counter weights. These weights were only in use for a very short period and were made illegal in 1903 or thereabouts. These examples are transfer decorated in green with "Imperial" and "4lb" or "2lb" or "1lb" to the top and "W&T Avery Ltd Birmingham" in ribbon swags to the front. These are in super condition with just minor blemishes. The original lead infills used to counterbalance the true weights are still present. These were made by Wedgwood although not marked as such.

4lb = 3.5" tall plus 4.25" diam base.

2lb = 3.25" tall plus 3 5/8" diam base.

1lb = 2.25" diam plus 2.75" diam base.

This example is transfer printed "1/2lb" to the top "W&T Avery Birmingham" around the base and has retained the lead infill to the underside for counterbalancing to the true weight. All is complete and in good order.

Original, quality pair of late 19th century W&T Avery ceramic grocers' / butchers' counter weights. These weights were only in use for a very short period and were made illegal in 1903 or thereabouts. These examples are transfer decorated in green with "Imperial" and "4lb" or "2lb" to the top and "W&T Avery Ltd Birmingham" in ribbon swags to the front. These are as near mint condition as you could hope for with just one miniscule blemish to the top of the "4lb" very near to "Imperial". The lead infills used to counterbalance to the true weights are present and more than that, they are both stamped in the lead with an identical customs and excise mark, 'VR' for the Reign of Queen Victoria over "572" and beneath the Crown for Queen Victoria. A wonderful pair of weights the best I have seen and complete. These were made by Wedgewood although not marked as such.

Original, quality circa 1900, bell shaped cast brass shop weight with an open grip to the top. This example is stamped "W&T Avery Ltd" to the shoulder and "2lb" to the top of the grip. All has been polished and lacquered, although the lacquer may be removed at no extra cost. All is complete and in good and working order.

Original, quality late 19th century Grocers' or Butchers' shop counter weight in white ceramic in the shape of a "cottage loaf". This large example has some damage to the reverse under the top grip which could be restored but otherwise all is complete and in good order. These ceramic weights were only in use for a very short period and were made illegal in 1903 or thereabouts. This 7lb version has a band of green decoration around the lower rim, a ribbon swag to the shoulder with details for the manufacutrer "W&T Avery Birmingham", good wear marks to the underside and the original lead infill to the base. With the exception of the damage to the reverse the rest is in super condition and complete.
