Brass Skirt Lifter SL8

£115.00 GBP

Original, quality, late 19th century, brass skirt lifter. This example is impressed "Surprise" to both sides and also with the registration lozenge mark for the year 1852. These were worn by housekeepers or the lady of the house on a cord around the waist. to hold up the front of their long skirts when ascending stairs whilst carrying a tray or similar. The hanging sprung clip would hold up the skirt six inches or so to prevent the leading foot rising up the stairs from treading on the skirt; thus preventing a trip. A very sensible and useful gadget. Polished and lacquered, although the lacquer may be removed at no extra cost. Complete and in good and working order.

3.5" x 1.5". 0.75".
