The more horses you had in the team, the more bells were worn and the louder the noise, which was primarily to warn the next village about the number of horses you were, which related to the size and weight of the load being pulled. It would not be easy to stop or to get going again. This example is complete, be it the leather hood has come adrift and the leatherworks has seen better days, it is still a good find and is mounted into a slab of pitch pine made to suit. This has a super sound when shaken.
